Standings after game three(R)

  • We can update this every week. Here it is after every team has played 3 games.
    1 Inter 2 9
    2 Milan 3 7
    3 Juventus 3 7
    4 Bologna 3 7
    5 Empoli 3 6
    6 Piacenza 3 6
    7 Modena 3 6
    8 Parma 3 5
    9 Lazio 3 4
    10 Udinese 3 4
    11 Chievo Verona 2 3
    12 Brescia 3 3
    13 Roma 3 3
    14 Perugia 3 3
    15 Reggina 3 1
    16 Atalanta 3 1
    17 Como 3 1
    18 Torino 3 0
Hence, if the season ended today, Torino would be at the bottom and INTER would win the scudetto. The relegation teams would be Torino, Como, Atlanta, and Reggina, and the CL teams would be Inter, Juve, Milan, and Bologna if it's still 4, but I think they switched it to three because of our preformances last season. Does anyone know?

  • Well, bestianera said it on this site, but when I quizzed him about his source, he sent me a PM acknowledging that he had read it wrong, or some such thing.

Italy could be in a difficult spot in the next couple of years because of their dismal performances in Europe over the past few seasons. But if they start doing well again - it's based on a running average of the past five seasons' results - they should be fine. They are fairly comfortably ahead of 4th-place Germany, whose teams are off to a poor start this season. The top 3 leagues get 4 teams apiece, and after that it drops to 3 teams.

  • Actually, Germany lost the spot to England, right? All the info you could ever want about how these things are determined can be found at:

  • I heard it was three spots next year as well.

  • o good. I thought I heard that they had changed it

  • No, that's not the case. Italy is still playing for four Champions League spots.

  • I think you maybe right that Italy keeps the 4 spots for next year, 2003-04, because the leagues must know in advance how many spots they are playing for. But I think I read somewhere that it doesn't matter how good Italy does this year(they could have 4 semifinalists in CL and UEFA cup) they still will not keep the 4 spots for 2004-05. One great year will not be enough to overcome this. Germany will pass them for at least one season. Next year Italy will be losing the coefficients for 98/99(which was good year for Italy) whereas Germany will be losing the coefficients for 98/99(which was a bad year for Germany).

  • No it's still 4, but Italy will have to have a strong showing this season in order to keep the four.

The numbers changed this season, with Portugal losing a spot and England gaining a spot.
